In 1901, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York (later King George V and Queen Mary) toured the British Empire, travelling on the steamship "Ophir". Their tour included Malta, Ceylon, the Cape Colony in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the Colony of Newfoundland. The tour was designed by Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain with the support of Prime Minister Lord Salisbury to reward the dominions for their participation in the South African War of 1899–1902.

HMS Ophir arrived in Auckland, New Zealand, on 11 June 1901 and left Lyttleton in the South Island on 27 June. The Duke and Duchess visited Rotorua, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.
