The South West African Territory Force (SWATF) was an extension or auxiliary of the South African Defence Force set up to combat the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), a liberation terrorist movement seeking independence. It was formed on 1 August 1980 from Southwest Africans already serving in the SADF and civilian personnel. The force was disbanded in 1989 in advance of SWA becoming the newly independent Namibia.
