Notes: The R.N.V.R.(SA) was formed after the creation of Union of South Africa in 1913 by the amalgamation of the two colonial naval units, the Natal Naval Volunteers (NNV) and the Cape Naval Volunteers (CNV). During WWI the strength of the RNVR(SA) was about 500 men, some serving on Royal Navy ships supporting the campaigns in German Southwest Africa and in German East Africa, the remainder serving in the Simonstown naval base. The RNVR(SA) was disbanded in 1922 on the formation of South Africa's first Permanent Force Navy, the SA Naval Service.
