Edge: Plain.

Obverse: Raised (reeded on silver medal) rim. Four shields linked together by ornaments with the coat of arms for the Cape Province, Natal, the Orange Free State and Southern Rhodesia around the circular coat of arms for the Transvaal. Legend on a band above: "SOUTH.AFRICAN.AMATEUR.ATHLETICS.AND.CYCLING.ASSOCIATION" and below between stars: "COMPETITION".

On bronze medal, makers name: "LAVINE (below Cape CoA) BROTHERS (below Natal CoA)".

Reverse: Raised (reeded on silver) rim. Within a laurel wreath, space for engraving.

1922 medal: 1922 / 1. MILE FLAT RACE / Championship / SECOND / J.H. MILLER". Stamped with the makers mark: "W.J.D" and the Birmingham sterling silver hallmarks for 1922-23 (date letter X).

1929 medal: "1929 / 400 YDS RELAY / SECOND / NATAL / H.S.SAVAGE". Stamped: "SILVER" near lower right rim.

Notes: The medals were originally made in Great Britain. Subsequently manufacture was in South Africa eventually by Lavine Brothers.

The S.A. Amateur Athletic and Cycling Association was formed in 1905 with the merger of the S.A. Cycling Union and the S.A. Athletic Union. The association was dissolved in 1958 after 53 years.

Southern Rhodesia had voted in 1922 not join the Union of South Africa but remained a member of this sporting association.
