Obverse: Britannia standing, front, left hand holding olive branch right hand resting on a beehive which surmounts a world globe. British union shield below right. Scenes of transport with ships (left) and train (right). Other symbols of the arts and industry about. In the exergue: "OTTLEY (left) BIRMM. (right)".


Reverse: Front view of the exhibition building. Angel flying above, left, wreath in right hand, palm frond in left. Legend above in three arcs: "THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION / IN THE 25TH. YEAR OF THE REIGN OF / QUEEN VICTORIA.". In the exergue: "OPENED 1ST. MAY 1862. / DESIGNED BY / CAPTAIN FOWKE R.E. / (line) / ERECTED BY (in an arc) / MESSRS. KELK AND LUCAS. (in an arc)". Signed below the exergue line: "OTTLEY (left) BIRMM. (right)"

Notes: The 1862 International Exhibition was held from 1 May to 1 November, beside the gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society, South Kensington, London.

South Africa was represented only by Colony of Natal, the Cape Colony having refused to allocate funds. There were exhibits of agricultural products, notably from the rapidly growing sugar industry. Aspects of Zulu culture and the flora a fauna of Natal were on display.
