The counterstamped coins were produced as souvenirs at the 6th South African Numismatic Convention held under the auspices of the Natal Numismatic Society in Durban at the Elangeni Hotel between 5th and 10th July 1976.
One counterstamp: sold to the public. Two counterstamps: sold at a premium to the public. Three counterstamps: presented to those involved with the organisation of the convention. Four counterstamps (unique): presented to Pastor J.F. Rowlands, an eminent Durban numismatist.
The majority of Maria Theresa Thalers found in South Africa were produced in WW2 and used as trade currency by British and South African Forces during the Ethiopian campaign.
