Otago and Southland, both in the South Island, are the two southernmost regions of New Zealand. The Fourth New Zealand Contingent was recruited from these regions and also from the North Island. The total strength was 462 men and they departed for South Africa on two ships, the first sailing from Port Chalmers on 24 March 1900 and the second from from Lyttelton on 31 March 1900.
