Reverse: Within a laurel(?) wreath tied at the bottom, across: "TO / COMMEMORATE (in an arc) / THE / DEPARTURE / OF / N.Z. TROOPS / FROM / OTAGO / MARCH 1900".

Notes: Otago is a region in the southern part of the South Island. The Fourth New Zealand Contingent was mostly recruited from this regions with a total strength was 462 men. The troops from Otago and Southland departed for South Africa, sailing from Port Chalmers on 24 March 1900.
