Form: Circular with ornate ribbon bar riveted to the medal. The ribbon is orange bordered with two outer wide blue stripes and two narrow inner blue stripes.

Obverse: Diademed head of young Queen Victoria, left. Signed on truncation: "W. WYON R.A.". Legend: "VICTORIA (left) REGINA (right)".

Reverse: Lion crouching on platform, left, protea bush behind. In the exergue: "1853". Legend: "SOUTH AFRICA". Signed: "L.C. Wyon" at the foot.

Notes: The medal was issued (without a clasp) to British and Colonial troops engaged in various actions against several native tribes in the north eastern part of the Cape Colony between 1834 and 1853.
