This was a commemorative medal, available for purchase, rather than a military issue. It was made in 1908 for the Schutztruppen (colonial protection troops) and German colonials in commemoration of the successful suppression of a series of revolts between 1904 and 1907 by the natives of German Southwest Africa (mainly the Herero people).
