The first South African Grand Prix was held in in 1934 in the coastal city of East London. Eleven Grand Prix events were held in that city between 1934 and 1966 after which the circuit move to Kyalami near Johannesburg. Apartheid boycotts and the rising cost of hosting formula one events brought and end to the South African Grand Prix
