The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York visited South Africa in 1901 as part of a Royal tour of the Colonies during the Boer War. The Duke, also the Prince of Wales, was installed as Chancellor of the University of Good Hope on August 21st and received on that occasion the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws.

The Duke remained Chancellor until 1912 when by that time he had become King George V.
