Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd (1901 - 1966) was a member of the National Party of South Africa and Prime Minister from 1958 until his assassination in 1966. Under his premiership South Africa broke away from Great Britain and became a republic in 1961. He is remembered as the man behind the conception and implementation of apartheid.
This medal may have been made for a foundation endowed one year after Verwoerd was assassinated.
