Obverse: Bareheaded bust of Verwoerd in jacket and tie, front. Signed: “SE” above shoulder on the left. Legend above: “H.F. VERWOERD GEDENKPENNING” and below: “1967 SEPTEMBER 1992”.

Reverse: Half laurel wreath with space above for engraving. This medal not engraved. Stamped below: "(springbok head) S925 U (for year 1994) S.A.M".

Notes: Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd (1901 - 1966) was a member of the National Party of South Africa and Prime Minister from 1958 until his assassination in 1966. Under his premiership South Africa broke away from Great Britain and became a republic in 1961. He is remembered as the man behind the conception and implementation of apartheid.

This medal may have been made for a foundation endowed one year after Verwoerd was assassinated.
