The pair of medals comes inside a wooded fitted case together with a 2004 proof 1/4 oz Krugerrand. Metal plaque on the outside of the lid: "Thomas Framcois Burgers / 1874-2004 / LIMITED EDITION: 400 / 130 Years Anniversary". There is a certificate from the SA Mint stating mintage of 400.
Thomas François Burgers (1834-1881) was the 4th president of the ZA Republic from 1872 to 1877. The gold, sovereign-like, coins which he commissioned were designed by LC Wyon and struck at the Heaton Mint, Birmingham. The mintage was Fine Beard 695 & Coarse Beard 142 and make these coins one of South Africa's rarities.
