Chamberlain was a committed imperialist and the British Colonial Secretary during the Boer War.
On 8 July 1906, Chamberlain celebrated his seventieth birthday. In his home city of Birmingham there were official luncheons, public addresses, parades and bands.
A few days later on 13 July he suffered a crippling stroke from which he never fully recovered.
