Obverse: Reeded rim. Map of Southern Africa with lines of longitude and latitude, ground below, ostrich on left, radiant half-sun above rampant lion right. Territories marked on map: "CAPE C. (Cape Colony)", "OFS (Orange Free State Republic)", "NATAL (Colony of Natal)", "S.A.R. (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek)", "GP (German Protectorate of Southwest Africa", "BSAC (British South Africa Company - Rhodesia)". The Orange, Limpopo and Zambezi Rivers are named. Cape Town and Post Elizabeth are identified by their initials. Legend on a raised roughened band above: "SOUTH AFRICAN AMATEUR / ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION." and below between ornaments: "CHAMPIONSHIP."

Reverse: Reeded rim. Within continuous wreath space for engraving. This medal: "PUTTING THE SHOT / CHAMPIONSHIP OF / SOUTH AFRICA 1898 / H.D. GRADWELL /40 ft. 6 in."

Notes: The Wanderers (sports) Club was founded on the 18th August 1888 in Johannesburg. From this grew an athletics section and with the assistance of Llewellyn Andersson the South Africa Amateur Athletic Association was formed with Abe Bailey as its president. The first Championship Meeting was held at the Wanderers Grounds in March 1894.
