Obverse: Port broadside view of a Portugese caravel without a cross on the sail. In large letters below: “DIAS88”.

Reverse: (1) Legend above: “AGOSTO 1487 – DEZEMBRO 1488” and below between ornaments: “LISBOA”.
(2) Legend above: “RIO DOS VAQUEIROS” and below between ornaments: “JANIERO 1488”.
(3) Legend above: “AGUADA DE SAO BRAS” and below between ornaments: “FEBREIRO 1488”.
(4) Legend above: “SAO GREGORIO” and below: “MARGO 1488”.

Notes: The Portuguese navigator, Bartolomeu Dias, led an expedition in 1488 in an attempt to discover a sea route to India. He was the first European known to have rounded the Cape of Good Hope which he named the Cape of Storms.

"DIAS88" was the catch-name given to the the celebrations in South Africa to mark the quin-centenary.
