The first South African parliament met in 1910 when the Union of South Africa was founded. It is believed that this is the only medal to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Union of South Africa.

The National Numismatic Society is based in Gauteng Province. It was originally named the Transvaal Numismatic Society but changed its name in 1994.

A variety of the silver medal exists, which is believed to be a rejected trial strike. On the obverse, below the parliament building: "1 Ounce Ag 999". On the reverse below the 60, "1950-2010" is missing.
