Notes: The 1 Troy ounce gold Krugerrand is a bullion coin first minted at the Rand Refinery and at South African Mint on 3 July 1967. The introduction was a means for the country to export gold and the Krugerrand has become the world’s most widely traded bullion coin. Over 50 million ounces of gold Krugerrand coins have been minted. Curiously it is legal tender in South Africa but with an unspecified value. This status circumvents laws of gold ownership, taxation, export and, importantly at the time of introduction, sanctions against apartheid.
