The Castle (correctly called: The Castle of Good Hope (English); Kasteel de Goede Hoop (Dutch); Kasteel die Goeie Hoop (Afrikaans)) is an octagonal fortified stone structure built by the Dutch East India Company between 1666 and 1679. It was originally located on the coastline of Table Bay but it now somewhat inland because of land reclamation

The National Monument heritage plaque is affixed to all South African buildings of historical importance. In the middle is the the classical archway of the Cape Town Castle showing the Lion of Nassau on the pediment. Legend anticlockwise on a raised band around: “NASIONALE GEDENKWAARDIGHEID NATIONAL MONUMENT”. The whole enclosed within a wreath of protea flowers tied at the bottom and, at the top, old coat of arms of South Africa.

The cross seen in the centre of the archway was added in 1969 when the National Monuments Council was formed from the old Historical Monument Commission. The cross is a Portuguese Padrão. These stone columns with a cross at the top, emblazoned with the coat of arms of Portugal, were erected as navigational markers on the African coastline during the voyages of discovery of the 15th century around Africa and over to India.
