Edge: Upright reeded.

Obverse: Old coat of arm of the City of Pietermaritzburg: elephant on shield, left, five radiant stars (Southern Cross) above and motto: "UMGUNGUNHLOVU (in isiZulu – the place of the elephant)" on a ribbon below. Divided by the arms: "1977". Legend: Pietermaritzburg Numismatic Society".

Reverse: Laurel wreath tied at the bottom enclosing space for engraving. This silver medal engraved: "Prof Michael GG Laidlaw Fellow of the PMBNS". This bronze medal engraved: "Raksha Dookhi for Services Rendered".

Silver medal stamped: "SILVER" at the foot.

Notes: Comes inside a square, back, fitted case, ornamented on the outside with a gilded design. Lined on the inside with black velvet-like and white silk-like material.

The Pietermaritzburg Numismatic Society was founded in 1977. Pietermaritzburg is the capital city of Kwa-Zulu Natal and is located about 80km inland from the port city of Durban.

Five medals were made in silver and ten in bronze. The recipients of the silver medal were:

One bronze medal was awardee to Morgan Carroll for the promotion of numismatics.

One silver and three bronze medals were sold privately.

The silver medal shown here was awarded to the author of this website who was made a Fellow of the Society in recognition of his term as Chairman of the Society and for the creation of this website.

Similar medals were issued in 2022 to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Society (Laidlaw 1404).
