The Pietermaritzburg Numismatic Society was founded in 1977. Pietermaritzburg is the capital city of Kwa-Zulu Natal and is located about 80km inland from the port city of Durban.
Twenty medals were made in silver and thirty in bronze.
Similar medals were were awarded in 2021 to members of the Society for their achievements and contribution to the Society (Laidlaw 1395)
