Edge: Plain. Some numbered. This medal: "72".

Obverse: Full figure of a golfer in suit and bowler hat about to drive off, watched by a second golfer to the left. Trees behind. On a band above: “LT. GEN SIR HENRY D’O TORRENS – FOUNDER OF THE CAPE GOLF CLUB – 14 NOV 1885” and below: “FIRST MONTHLY MEDAL – WATERLOO GREEN”.

Reverse: A modification of the emblem of the Royal Cape Golf Club. Within an outlined oval border, above: “ROYAL CAPE GOLF CLUB” and below: “1885 – 1985”. The oval is surmounted by a crown. Inside across: “100 (large letters) / CENTENARY” and below that two crossed golf clubs and four balls. Stamped: “SILVER” at the foot.

Notes: Comes inside a green, square, fitted case, lined on the inside with white silk-like and green velvet-like material. In gold lettering on the inside of the lid: "McCallum / and Stevens / CAPE TOWN".

At the instigation of Lt. General Sir Henry D'Oyley Torrens the Cape Golf Club was founded 1885 and the first course was established on Waterloo Green at the Wynberg Military Camp. Torrens was acting Governor of the Cape Colony during 1886.

The obverse is taken from a photograph of the first medal competition held in 1886 which hangs in the present-day clubhouse. It shows General Torrens driving off on the Waterloo Green Links.
