Cornelis Jacob Langenhoven (1873-1932) was a prominent Afrikaans writer, poet and journalist. His is known as 'die Vader van Afrikaans' for his efforts to establish and gain official acceptance of the language. In 1918 he wrote the words for the national anthem, 'Die Stem van Suid-Afrika'. The legend on the reverse is from the anthem and translates, "We shall live, we shall die, we are for you, South Africa".
