Comes in a white, square, fitted case, lined on the inside with white silk-like and blue velvet-like material. Embossed on the outside of the lid with the ZAR Penny stamp in gold. On the inside of the lid: "Zuid / Afrikaansche / Republiek / FIRST STAMP 1869".
Accompanied by a certificate from the South African Bureau of Standards and the maker, E.Tiessen, giving the specifications and stating a mintage of 1,000.
The first stamps of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek were printed in Germany by Adolph Otto of Gustrow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, in 1869, and consisted of the values Penny, Sixpence and Shilling. The printing plates were shipped to South Africa and subsequently another four different printers produced stamps in the same design.
