Mohandas (Mahatma) Karamchand Gandhi (1869–1948) was the leader of Indian nationalism, which gained independence for India in 1947 from Great Britain. Gandhi was a lawyer and practised in South Africa for 21 years between 1893 and 1914. He served in both the Boer War and in the Natal Rebellion, leading an Indian corps of ambulance drivers and stretcher bearers. On January 30, 1948 he was assassinated in New Delhi by a Hindu extremist.
