Thw Electricity Supply Commission (Eskom) was founded in 1923 by the Electricity Act of 1922 which allowed the South African Electricity Control Board to appoint van der Bijl as chairman.
Hendrik Johannes van der Bijl (1887-1948) was a South African electrical engineer and industrialist and is regarded as one of the greatest South Africans for his contribution to the country's development. He was the driving force behind the establishment of the Eskom and the South African Steel and Iron Corporation, ISCOR.
