Reverse:
Three British soldiers, from different branches of the armed services, advancing to the right, passing an artillery piece. The first, on horseback carrying a lance. The second, a sailor holding a Union Jack standard in his left hand and a rifle in his right. The third, a kilted soldier from a Scottish regiment with sword drawn. They are being cheered by a fourth soldier standing behind the artillery piece and waving his hat marked: “CIV” (London City Imperial Volunteers). In the exergue: “MAFEKING / 1899-1900”.
Notes:
In an arc, at the foot of the medal on the reverse the remains of an inscription can be seen faintly. It probably reads: “SPINK & SON, LONDON” in widely spaced lettering.
General Baden-Powell went on to form the Boy Scouts movement which adopted his characteristic hat as part of its uniform.
