Edge: Plain. Silver medal stamped: “1ARGENT”, bronze medal stamped: “BRONZE”, with the cornucopia mint mark of the Paris Mint. The large bronze medal sometimes impressed with a presentation inscription followed by the medallists: "JPL" monogram. This medal: "A RAAB D'OËRRY SON AMI".

Obverse: Bareheaded bust of Kitchener in uniform, slightly left. Laurel branches in low relief behind. Legend: “LORD KITCHENER FIELD-MARSHAL”. Signed: “J.P. LEGASTRLOIS” close to the rim at the bottom.

Reverse: A flag pole with the British Ensign flag waving to the right. On the left, Britannia as Minerva armed with shield and sword, standing upon a rocky promontory. In large letters across below the flag: “THOROUGH”. Signed: “J.P. LEGASTRLOIS” close to the rim at the bottom.

Notes: Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850 - 1916) was Chief of Staff in the initial stages of the Boer War and succeeded Lord Roberts as commander-in-chief during the guerrilla phase.

In 1914, at the start of the First World War, Lord Kitchener became Secretary of State for War. Kitchener was killed on 5 June 1916 when the armoured cruiser, HMS Hampshire, taking him to negotiations in Russia was sunk by a German mine.

Kitchener's motto was, 'Thorough'.
