Edge: Plain

Obverse: Bareheaded bust of Pretorius in jacket and tie, half-right. Legend: “STIGTER ∙ M∙W∙PRETORIUS ∙ FOUNDER”. Signed: “E.N.” close to the foot of the bust.

Reverse: Coat of arms of Pretoria with supporters, castle crest and motto on a ribbon below: “PRAESTANTIA PRAEVALEAT PRAETORIA”. In an arc above: “PRETORIA” and below: “1855 – 1955”. The silver medal has the SAM sterling silver mark.

Notes: Marthinus Wessel Pretorius (1819-1901) founded the city of Pretoria in 1855. He was also the first president of the Z.A. Republiek. He named the city in honour of his father, the renowned Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius.

500 medals were struck in silver for presentation by the City Council to those who assisted with the centenary celebrations and 300 were struck in bronze for sale to the public.
