The medal was produced shortly after Churchill's death and commemorates the long-standing friendship between the two men.
The silver medal comes in a red case with: “CHURCHILL / (line) / SMUTS” in gilt lettering on the outside. The bronze medal comes in blue case.
According to Bickel’s 100 sets of 3 medals were produced. In addition 650 silver and 1650 bronze medals were struck.
