Obverse: A view of the Church of the Vow in Pietermaritzburg. Below across: “DE OUDE” and below that in arcs: “VOORTREKKERSKERK / PIETERMARITZBURG / DEC:16.1838.”. Legend on a band above: “TER HERRINNERING AAN DINGAANSDAG”, and below between stops: “IN COMMEMORATION OF (small oblique) DINGAANS DAY”.

Reverse: Within a laurel wreath tied at the foot with a bow and flanked by laurel sprigs, a scroll with eight names: “P. RETIEF. / G. MARITZ. / P. UŸS. / H. POTGIETER. / A. PRETORIUS / S. CILLIERS. / K. LANDMAN. / H. DE LANGE”. At the bottom, the maker’s name: “J SULLIVAN”. The gold medal is stamped at the top: “9CT” and the silver medal: “SILVER”.

Notes: The historic Church of the Vow was refurbished as a museum and opened by General Schalk Burger on 16th December 1912, the 74th anniversary of the Battle of Blood River at which the Voortrekkers defeated the warriors of the Zulu Chief Dingaan.

The medal names the Voortrekker leaders Pieter Mauritz Retief, Gerrit Maritz, Petrus Lafras Uys, Andries Hendrik Potgieter, Andries Wilhelmus Jacobus Pretorius, Charl (Sarel) Arnoldus Cilliers, Carel Pieter Landman and Johan Hendrik (Hans Dons) de Lange.
