Obverse: Uniformed bust of Colonel Mackinnon wearing a slouch hat with CIV badge, front and slightly left. In an arc below: “COLONEL W.H. MACKINNON”. Legend: “IN MEMORY OF THEIR GALLANT DEEDS IN SOUTH AFRICA”.

Reverse: Within a laurel (right) and oak (left) wreath tied at the bottom, across in large letters: “C.I.V” with ornaments above and below. In an arc above: “SOUTH AFRICA” and below: “1899 – 1900”.

Notes: Colonel William Henry Mackinnon was the Colonel Commandant of the City Imperial Volunteers, established by Royal Warrant, and recruited from the greater London area.
