Edge: Upright reeded.

Obverse: Bust of Mandela in jacket and tie, half right. Legend incused on a raised band around from shoulder to shoulder: "(7 triangles) NELSON ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA".

Reverse: African scholar bending over book with pen in right hand. Below: "FINE SILVER". Legend incused on a raised band: "EDUCATION (triangle) LITERACY (triangle) ACHIEVEMENT" and below: "(4 triangles) EDUCATION FOR ALL (4 triangles)".

Notes: Both medals come protected inside a clear plastic capsule in a case with a certificate stamped with the issue number. The case for the gold medal is red and the certificate states a mintage of 2,000. The case for the silver medal is blue and the certificated states a mintage of 10,000.

The medal was commissioned by the First National Bank and minted for Education Africa.

Tenth oz medals were also made.

The value of these medals represents a large premium over the metal price. This premium may not be sustained.
