Obverse: Against an ornate background, the arms of the Natal University College on a shield: two wildebeests galloping to the left and above, against a horizontally lined background, anchor and star flanked by elephants. . Motto on a ribbon below: “STELLA AURORAE”. Legend on a raised band in ornate letters: “NATAL UNIVERSITY COLLEGE” with an ornament at the foot.

Reverse: Within a laurel wreath, space for engraving the details of the recipient. Upper illustrated medal: " * 1928 * / J.J. SHORT. / 3RD. YEAR. / CHEMISTRY / PHYSICS". Lower illustrated medal: "1931. / K.I. BRANDON / 1ST YEAR / GEOGRAPHY". Signed: "G.A. & S." at the foot.

Notes: Sometimes found within a green presentation case marked: "HENRY WADE / WATCHMAKERS & JEWELLER / 205 CHURCH ST / MARIRZBURG / NATAL / MADE IN ENGLAND" on the inside of the lid.

The Natal University College was founded in 1910 and located on King Edward VII Avenue in Pietermaritzburg. In 1939 it was expanded to include a campus in Durban and in 1947 the College became the fully fledged University of Natal. The University was merged with the University of Durban-Westville (reserved for Indian students under apartheid) in 2004 to form the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal.
