Obverse: Crowned and robed bust of the King, right. Legend: “H.M. KING EDWARD VIII”.

Reverse: Shield bearing the arms of the City of London flanked by laurel sprigs and on a ribbon below: “ASCENDED THRONE 20TH JAN 1936”. Below, across: TO COMMEMORATE THE / CORONATION OF / KING EDWARD VIII / AT / WESTMINSTER ABBEY / (ornate line) / 12TH MAY 1937 (in an arc)”. Around the rim at the top: “BRITISH MADE”.

Notes: King Edward VIII (1894-1972) was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary. Edward became king when his father died in early 1936. He abdicated in December of that year in favour of marriage to the American divorcee Wallis Simpson. The coronation commemorated on this medal never took place. His younger brother was crowned King George VI later in 1937.
