Helmeted Canadian solder, rifle at the ready, climbing on rock ground, right, followed by second soldier with only head and shoulder visible. Exploding bomb above and mountains behind. On the right within a twisted wire frame decorated with maple leaves: "ONE QUEEN / ONE FLAG / ONE EMPIRE / (crown flanked by stops) / SOUTH / AFRICA / 1900". Maker's name at the foot: "P.W. ELLIS & CO TORONTO". Legend above: "CANADA MUST BE RECKONED WITH".

Comoes inside a brown suede leather case lined with velvet and silk on the inside. In gilded letters on the outside of the lid: "TRADE (maple leaf) MARK / DESIGNERS AND / MANUFACTURES / OF MEDALS / (ornamental lines) / P.W. ELLIS / 31 & 33 WELLINGTON / STREET EAST / TORONTO CANADA".
The Industrial Exhibition Association of Toronto was formed in 1878 by John Jacob Withrow (1833–1900) . Exhibitions were held annually at Exhibition Place. The exhibition is now known as the Canadian National Exhibition.
