Edge: Plain

Obverse: Barehead bearded bust in high relief of de Wet wearing bandoleer. Signed in script: "Fr. Joris. Sc." on the truncation and below that, round the rim, signed: "BAETES FEC". Legend in incused letters: "CHRISTIAAN (left) DE WET (right)".

Reverse: Across: "GENERAAL / C.R. de WET / NAAR HET LEVEN / DOOR / FRANS JORIS / BEELDHOUWER / ANTWERPEN / 1902".

Notes: In this example there is no hole in the lug for a ring. Other examples have been silver plated.

General de la Rey was part of a delegation which visited Europe at the end of the Boer War to seek funding for reconstruction. This medal dates from that time.

Frans Joris (1851-1914) was an eminent Belgian sculptor better known for the statues and monuments he produced than as a medallist.
