Obverse: Coat of arms arms of Johannesburg with motto: “FORTITER ET RECTE” on a scroll below. Across below: “1886-1889”. An ornate: “JF”, the logo of the Johannesburg Festival, on the left, right and top. Legend above: “PIONEER (left) PIONIER (right)" and below: “JOHANNESBURG”.

Reverse: A large: “JF” logo flanked by the dates: “1886 (left) 1956 (right)”.

Notes: Comes in a square blue cardboard box with: "SAM" in gold letters on the outside of the lid.

The Johannesburg Festival was organised to celebrate the 70th anniversary the founding of the city in 1886. As part of the celebration, those people who had settled or were born in Johannesburg before 31st December 1886 were presented with one of these medals by the Governor-General at a function in the Langham Hotel. Pioneers arriving in 1887, 1888 and 1889 also received a medal in the post with an accompanying letter.

It is recorded in AM2 that 520 medals were issued.
