Edge: Engraved with the regimental number, rank and name of recipient in large capital letters. Also has the name of the St. John Ambulance corps to which the recipient belonged. For example: “1228 PTE A. HARGREAVES. NELSON CORPS”

Obverse: Bare head of King Edward VII, left. Signed, immediately below the truncation: “FUCHS 1901”. The legend: “EDWARDVS VII. D.G. BRITT. REX. F.D. IND. IMP. (Edward VII, by the grace of God, King of the British people, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India)”

Reverse: In the centre, the shield of the Order of St John, being an upright cross with a lion and a unicorn alternately in the angles and superimposed on a Maltese cross. Sprigs of St John’s Wort on each side. Motto on a ribbon below: “PRO FIDE PRO UTILITATE HOMINUM (for the faith and the service of mankind)”. Above, divided by the design: “1899 1902”, and above that, in an arc: “SOUTH AFRICA”. Legend on a band: “MAGNUS PRIORATUS ORDINIS HOSPITALIS SANCTI JOHANNIS JERVSALEM IN ANGLIA (the Grand Priory of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England)”

Notes: These medals were awarded to trained, uniformed, men & woman of the St John Ambulance Brigade who served in South Africa or were associated with the war.
