Within ropework on a band ornamented with four masks, a folded ribbon decorated around with shamrocks, inscribed: "TO / COMMEMORATE / IRISH / VALOUR". The outer ropework is not present on the smaller medals.

Queen Victoria visited the city of Dublin in Ireland during the month of April 1900. There she paid tribute the valour of loyal Irishmen who were fighting in the Boer War. She was then 80 years old and died the following year.
It is believed that the medals were worn on parade by those soldiers who had returned from South Africa.
It should be noted that other Irishmen, not loyal to Britain, were fighting on the Boer side.
Laidlaw 0706 is similar but is for "BRITISH VALOUR".
