Notes: Major General Sir Hector Archibald MacDonald, KCB, DSO (1853-1903) was a distinguished Scottish soldier rising through the ranks and choosing to be commission during the 2nd Afghan War rather than accepting the Victoria Cross. In the Boer War he had command of the Highland Brigade at Modder River and was with Lord Roberts at the occupation of Pretoria. He was knighted in April 1901. Posted to Ceylon as Commander-in-Chief of British forces, he committed suicide in 1903 following accusations of homosexual activity with local boys.
