Notes: General Sir Redvers Henry Buller VC GCB GCMG (1839-1908) was the Commander in Chief of British forces during the early months of the Boer War. He continued to command the Natal Field force after he was replaced by Lord Roberts. He was plagued by several initial defeats but, after his victory at the Battle of the Tugela Heights, he succeeded in lifting the siege of Ladysmith on 28th February 1900.

He was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
