Form: Ornamental cut-out from a gold sheet. A crowned circular band around a hexagonal star-shaped shield, loop at the top. On the outside of the band, shamrocks at the end points of the shield and smaller ornaments between.

Obverse: Shield engraved with the emblem of Greenock at the time: port broadside view of a three-masted ship in full sail and, in the foreground, a quay with a dockworker pushing barrels supervised by a foreman. In an arc above: “GOD SPEED GREENOCK”. At the bottom, the maker's mark: "WGM" on the left and the Birmingham 9ct gold hallmark for 1898-99 (y) on the right.

Reverse: Shield engraved across with ornaments: “South African / WAR / 1900”. Band ornamentally engraved.

Notes: Hibbard C9 records a Greenock tribute with a similar but less ornate design dated 1901 which is named.

This medal sold at Dix Noonan Webb action on September 2012 for £3,100
