Edge: Plain

Obverse: Bust of a bearded voortrekker male wearing a hat, right. Legend above: “INWYDING . INAUGURATION” and below between stops: “16 . 12 . 1949”. Stamped: “S.A.M” with sterling silver hallmark at the bottom of the bust.

Reverse: A view of the Voortrekker Monument with wall of wagons in front. Legend on a raised band above: “VOORTREKKERMONUMENT” and below between stops: “PRETORIA”.

Notes: 50 sets of the gold, silver and bronze inauguration medals were made and issued inside an oblong blue S.A. Mint case. An unknown number were made in silver and bronze and issued individually. The silver medal comes inside a square blue S.A. Mint case.

The Voortrekker Monument is located just south of Pretoria and commemorates the Voortrekkers who trekked northwards from the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854. The Monument was inaugurated on 16 December 1949 (the Day of the Vow) by the then-prime minister D.F. Malan.
