Edge: Plain. Silver medal stamped with the S.A. Mint sterling silver mark.

Obverse: Durban Coat of Arms with motto: “DEBILE PRINCIPIUM MELIOR FORTUNA SEQUETUR” on a ribbon below. Legend: “DURBAN CIVIC CENTENARY”.

Reverse: Anchor in front of cog wheel with “1854 (left) 1954 (right)” at the top.

Notes: Both medals were issued inside a blue case lined on the inside with white silk marked: "SAM" and blue velvet.

Durban is a sea port on the Indian Ocean and is the largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The city was originally established in 1824 as a settlement on the northern shore of the Bay of Natal. In 1835, the settlement was named "d'Urban" after Sir Benjamin d'Urban, then governor of the Cape Colony. The Borough of Durban was proclaimed in 1854
