Obverse: Bareheaded bust of of Landsteiner in Jacket and tie, left. Across on rectangles: "1868 (left) 1943 (right)" joined by a ribbon under the bust. On a raised wide band, legend above ".KARL LANDSTEINER. / ABO MN. P.Rh.", below on left: "DISCOVERER OF / BLOOD GROUPS" and below on right: "ONTDEKKER VAN / BLOEDGROEPE". Ornament at the foot.

Reverse: At the top, the emblem of the SA Blood Transfusion Services. On the left in concentric arcs: “THE SOUTH AFRICAN / BLOOD TRANSFUSION SERVICE / IN RECOGNITION OF / 150 (incuse) / BLOOD DONATIONS”. On the right in concentric arcs: “DIE SUID-AFRIKAANSE / BLOEDOORTAPPINGSDIENS / TER ERKENNING VAN /150 (incuse) / BLOEDSKENKINGS”. In the centre across: “ BY/DEUR" with space above and below for engraving. Cartouche at the bottom for engraving.

This medal engraved: "1998 / 31371 / G A TEMPLE".


Notes: The South African Blood Transfusion Service was restructured in 2001. The service is now know as the South African National Blood Service and a new system pf awards has been instituted.

Karl Landsteiner (1868-1943) was an Austrian biologist and physician. He documented the first three human blood groups A, B and O in 1900.
