Penarth is a seaside resort town 8.4 km south west from the city centre of the Welsh capital city of Cardiff.
The silver medal comes inside a fitted case of issue. It is believed to have been presented as a Boer War tribute medal to returning volunteers from Penarth although it is not recorded in Hibbard and is unnamed. One example is known and was sold twice by Dix Noonan Webb; once lot 690, 15 December 2000 for ₤420; and again lot 327, 23 September 2011 for ₤1,400.
