Edge: Plain. Thickness 4.7 mm.

Obverse: Within a circle, the monogram: "VOC" of the Dutch East India Company. Floral ornaments around outside with: "1602" at the top. Beaded border round the rim.

Reverse: Within a circle: "RMP".

Notes: The medal commemorates the founding of the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) in 1602. The company came to dominate European trade with the east for roughly the following 200 years. The company establish the first European settlement in South Africa at the Cape in 1652 under the command of Jan van Riebeeck.

Nothing is known about when and for what purpose this medal was made expect that it was possibly struck at the Royal Mint in Pretoria.
