Obverse: Arms of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek with motto: “EENDRAGT MAAKT MAGT” on a ribbon below. Legend on a raised wide band above: “NEDERDUITSCH HERVORMDE KERK” and below between stops: “AFRIKA”.

Reverse: Busts of the three men associated with the founding of the City of Pretoria, each named on a ribbon. In the upper centre, A.W.J. Pretorius in top hat, front, right hand holding a rifle and left arm in a sling. On the left, M.W. Pretorius, front and turned to right. On the right, D.V.D. Hoff, front and turned to left. Below a scene of buildings, underneath: “PRETORIA IN 1857”. Legend: “NEDERDUITSCH HERVORMDE GEMEENTE PRETORIA”. At the foot a book (bible) dividing the dates: “1855 1955”. Signed in incuse letters: "M.PAUW" lower right rim.

Notes: Marthinus Wessel Pretorius founded the city of Pretoria in 1855. He named the city after his father Andries Wilhelmus Jacobus Pretorius, the Voortrekker leader best remembered for his defeat of the Zulus at the Battle of Blood River in 1838. Dirk Van der Hoff was a minister born in the Netherlands. He established the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk in the Transvaal which became the official state church of the Z.A. Republic in 1857.

Only a small number of these medals were struck in silver for special presentation.
